This Yohji Yamamoto Fall 2001 avant garde black coat is a stunning example of the designer's ability to create stylish, elegantly fluid statement coats and jackets. This collection featured many pieces with the contrasting off white stripes that are found on one side of the coat. This coat has so much movement when worn and we love the high fashion nod to athletic wear!  This unique, dramatic piece has an asymmetrical hem that is longer in the front; (Yamamoto's version of a reverse tuxedo jacket), and it is so easy to wear.

Condition: Overall Excellent condition with a very small professional repair done on the inside at the zipper. Barely visible and not seen when zipped.

Yohji Yamamoto graduated with a law degree, but instead of pursuing law, he decided to learn tailoring skills from his seamstress mother. He then studied fashion design at the prestigious Bunka fashion college, whose alumni includes Kenzo Takada, Junya Watanabe, Jun Takahashi and Tsumori Chisato. His first collection was presented in Tokyo in 1977 , and in 1981, he presented his first Paris collection.

In Japanese, the space between the body and the garment is called ma and Yamamoto understood the importance of movement in clothing created by that space. “It’s about how to put air between cloth and body,” YY. His pieces are androgenous by design yet somehow take on the femininity or masculinity of the person who wears them. Yohji Yamamoto and Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons, who dated for several years, re-defined fashion and literally shook the fashion establishment when they sent their mostly black, "anti fashion" pieces down the runway in Paris. The two never collaborated, in fact, they mostly competed, but their unique perspectives are now still appreciated by fashion lovers of all ages around the world.

When you find a few unique coats and jackets, they can be powerful tools to transform any outfit you are wearing. We particularly love the unique style and form found in Yohji Yamamoto vintage pieces and believe you will find them to be irreplaceable!

"I think perfection is ugly. Somewhere in the things humans make, I want to see scars, failure, disorder, distortion."
